WILLIAM E. J. DOANE is a computer science education researcher and a research associate and founding member of the Association for the Cooperative Advancement of Science and Education (ACASE), a professional organization of educators and scientists working to improve education. Doane is a research staff member with IDA Science & Technology Policy Institute (STPI), a Federally Funded Research & Development Center tasked with supporting the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy. He is an adjunct research associate at the University at Albany and serves on the adjunct computing faculty at Hudson Valley Community College.

His recent work considers how novice computer programmers’ mental models of computation-related tasks influences success in learning to program. Doane endeavors to make computing accessible to a wide audience and to make computing education relevant for addressing real-world challenges.

Doane holds a PhD in Information Science (University at Albany, State University of New York) with a focus on computer science education research and a Masters degree in Information & Computer Science (University of Hawai`i) with a focus on uses of computing technologies to support K-12 educators. While in Hawai`i, he participated in a National Science Foundation funded initiative to develop web-based tools to support K-12 teacher collaboration and professional development at a distance. Doane’s undergraduate degree addressed issues in computer programming and linguistics (Hampshire College, School of Cognitive Science).
